Education Minister Helen McEntee to begin plans for mandatory student teacher placements in special education settings

The Teaching Council is to be asked to begin working on plans to introduce mandatory assessed placements for student teachers in special education settings.

Education Minister Helen McEntee is writing to the ­council today where she will ask the regulator to move towards a process of introducing this placement period with a view to implementing the initial changes in September next year.

The mandatory placements for student teachers will also be supported by appropriate modules.

The decision comes as part of a plan by the Government to ensure all teachers have the skills necessary to provide students with all abilities and requirements with an education.
